Parks & Public Spaces
Take your pick from the public squares in the city, each with a unique character, but all undeniably part of Manchester. St Ann's Square features cafes and fountains and you can go there to see buskers and street entertainment.
Albert Square lies next to the impressive architecture of the Town Hall. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the architect responsible for The University of Manchester's John Owens Building and London's Natural History Museum and is worth visiting for its regular exhibits and seasonal international markets.
In Exchange Square there is a great public space, complete with seating, ultra-modern water feature and an incredible large-screen TV broadcasting the latest regional news and events
There are also pockets of green space across Manchester city centre. Piccadilly Gardens is an oasis of greenery and water in the middle of the shopping district. Between Urbis and The Triangle is a landscaped green space perfect for relaxing and absorbing the surrounding architecture. Historic Castlefield is just a few minutes' walk from the city centre and has an urban heritage park with canals and walkways. There is also Whitworth Park which is well-maintained and located right next to the Whitworth Art Gallery.
