End of Conference Bulletin Board

During the Hypertext 2004 conference, a discussion list feature was integrated into the conference web site. This was an experiment to see what kinds of posts conference attendees might make if such capability were made available.

Unfortunately, a current phenomenon with open public discussion lists is spam, wherein someone will make a post, unrelated to the topic of the discussion list, pointing people to a commercial web site. It requires constant monitoring to remove such posts. Similarly, there are often ways to compromise the security of a web site that has open posting of this sort, and it was not entirely clear that the discussion list code was free of security holes. As a result, we have taken down the discussion list feature, prior to many of the conference organizers taking a vacation, since we would be unable to monitor the discussion list during this time (and prefer not to spend our time on this afterwards).
