In 2007, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia series which is the acknowledged venue for high quality peer-reviewed research on linking. The web, the semantic web and Web 2.0 are all manifestations of the success of the link. The Hypertext Conference provides the forum for research that considers links, their semantics, their presentation, the applications they have been put to, the knowledge that can be derived from their analysis and their effect on society. If information is connected, then the connection is called a link: the Hypertext Conference is concerned with all research concerning links.

The conference will take place June 19-21, 2008, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, directly after ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (see http://www.jcdl2008.org/). Both conferences are being hosted by the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. Following our theme of "linking people and places," it is of interest to note that in 1998, the ACM Hypertext and Digital Libraries conferences were co-located in Pittsburgh, PA. Soon after 1998, the ACM Digital Libraries Conference evolved into the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries. In 2008, Hypertext conference celebrating links is again linked to JCDL in Pittsburgh, ten years later.

ACM Student Research Competition at Hypertext 2008

Student Research Competition (SRC) at Hypertext 2008

Hypertext 2008 will be participating in the ACM Student Research Competition (http://www.acm.org/src/index.html) sponsored by Microsoft Research. The SRC, which is held at select ACM conferences, will provide an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students attending Hypertext 2008 to receive a $500 travel grant from Microsoft Research to present their research at Hypertext 2008. All invited students will compete in a conference competition for the best presentations, with the winners eligible for a spot in the SRC Grand Finals. The SRC is a valuable opportunity for students to participate in Hypertext 2008 and to receive recognition from ACM for the quality of their research.

The Hypertext 2008 SRC consists of two rounds: a poster session and a presentation session. A panel of judges will select a number of finalists from the poster session, who will be invited to the presentation session. Winners are selected from the presentation session. The top three graduate and undergraduate winners will receive cash awards.

The Hypertext 2008 SRC winners will be invited to participate in the SRC Grand Finals, an online round of competitions among the winners of individual conference-hosted SRCs. The winners of the Grand Finals are invited to the ACM awards banquet together with their advisors, for an all-expenses-paid trip.

The International Symposium on Wikis (WikiSym) is the only conference dedicated to all wiki research and practice -- lightweight, open, collaborative systems for recording and refining ideas and information.

WikiSym 2008 aims to explore and extend the thriving wiki community, again bringing together researchers, practitioners, writers and scholars to gather, discuss and share knowledge and experience on all areas related to wikis and wiki philosophy, ranging from social to technical, and from theoretical to experience studies.

The Symposium combines a rigorously reviewed research paper track, with plenty of space for practitioner reports, discussion of work in progress, demonstrations, tutorials, and lively informal last minute sessions within OpenSpace and WikiFest sessions.

This year, WikiSym will be held in Porto, Portugal, one of Europe's most ancient cities. Porto's airport is well served by discount air carriers, making it readily and economically accessible. Famous for its wine, its medieval quarters, and its storied history, Porto will provide a superb backdrop for innovation, discussion and wiki festivities.

This year we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the ACM Hypertext Conference series which has established the acknowledged venue for high quality peer reviewed research on linking. The web, the semantic web and the so called Web 2.0 are all manifestations of the success of the link. The Hypertext Conference provides the forum for research that considers links, their semantics, their presentation, the applications they have been put to, the knowledge that can be derived from their analysis and their affect of society. If information is connected, then the connection is called a link, and the Hypertext Conference is concerned with all research concerning links. In 2008 we intend to celebrate the power of the link.

Recent hypertext conferences have experimented with various approaches to reaching a wider community of researchers and encouraging them that their work is within the scope of the Hypertext Conference, and that their submissions will be reviewed by a program committee that are on the leading edge of their topic. To this end, this year�s conference will consist of four independent tracks, each with their own track committee, coordinated by an overall Program Chair.
