Technical Tracks

Hypertext 2010 will consist of three autonomous tracks, each with its own program committee and reviewing team.

Types of Submission
===============
The Conference welcomes the following types of submissions

Papers: Papers must report new results substantiated by experimentation, simulation, analysis, or application. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original, not previously published works. Submission categories include:

- regular research papers (max 10 pages) discussing mature work, and
- short papers (max 5 pages) describing preliminary results of on-going work or novel thought-provoking ideas.

Posters and Demos: Technical demonstration of new tools and innovative applications of hypertext are solicited, as well as research at a preliminary stage. Submissions may include:

Posters (max 2 pages) offer researchers a unique opportunity to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or research that is best communicated in an interactive or graphical format. Poster submissions are welcomed in areas related to any of the three tracks. Please note, however, that posters describing work at the proposal stage will not be accepted.

Demos (max 1 page) should describe the system and include a list of any required supporting equipment. We assume that most equipment will be supplied by the demonstrator. Poster and demos presentations further provide researchers with an opportunity to obtain direct feedback about their work from a wide audience during the poster session.

Workshops: Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference, Sunday, June 14th. Paper sessions will begin on Monday June 15. The purpose of the workshops is to provide a more informal setting for the exchange of ideas on a focused topic and suggest directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community. Acceptance of workshop proposals will be based on the organizer's experience and background in the topic, and on the relevance of the subject matter. See the Track descriptions for ideas.

Hypertext has always been about people and their relationships with information. The Hypertext Community has over thirty years of experience of exploring hypertext interfaces, infrastructures and usage. Now Web 2.0 technology and practice has greatly promoted this sort of interactive collaboration and social networking, resulting in large scale collaborative knowledge creation and e-democracy activities. Semantic Web technologies and the Linked Data Web could impact even more strongly. Imagine if most personal and organisational data were available on the Web and analysable with the help of software agents, how would people and organisations run their businesses, how would they identify, select, and collaborate with their partners and customers to face shared challenges?

Web Science is a proposed new discipline to study the continuing impact of the Web on people, business and society. Web Science is about understanding how technical innovation changes practice, and how behaviour in the small translates to behaviour in the large.

This special issue is for people who believe that their work is at the intersection of Hypertext and Web Science. We invite papers on a variety of technical topics with a personal, cultural or societal slant.

Papers should describe completed work with well-evidenced conclusions, and interdisciplinary work will be particularly welcomed.

Submissions may take the form of research papers or shorter technical notes and should be submitted electronically at the Journal's Manuscript Central site.

Questions and enquiries concerning this call should be directed to the guest editors. Open topic papers meeting NRHM's scope in general are also welcome.

The ACM Hypertext Conference is the main venue for high quality peer-reviewed research on "linking." The 2009 edition of Hypertext enjoyed a 70% increase in submissions from the previous year, yielding a selective yet broad and exciting technical program.

Hypertext 2009 will be held from June 29th to July 1st at the Villa Gualino Convention Center, on the hills overlooking Torino.

Since 2001, the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries has served as the major international forum focused on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term "digital libraries," including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, and distributing digital content; and theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing.

Conference presenters represent 15 different countries and 19 states in the United States The Program Committee accepted 29 full papers and 18 short papers. Covering a range of topics presenters will explore digital libraries along the theme of "Designing Tomorrow and Preserving the Past -- Today." Conference keynote speakers include Christine Borgman, Professor & Presidential Chair in Information Studies at UCLA and Gerhard Fischer, Director of the Center for Lifelong Learning and Design and a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The ever popular poster session (over 50 posters) will be held on the evening of Tuesday, June 16th "in real life" at the AT&T Center, as well as in "Second Life."

JCDL 2009 will be held in Austin, Texas and is hosted by the School of Information at the University of Texas. It has been organized by an international committee of scholars and leaders in the Digital Libraries field. For each demonstration, a table, electricity plugs and a display board for a poster, will be provided. Additional supporting equipment may be requested and will be provided where possible. Authors of accepted posters and demos are also required to print, before their departure, a poster panel (instructions on sizes will follow), that will be displayed in the demonstration site during the three days of the conference.

Hypertext 2009 will be participating in the ACM Student Research Competition sponsored by Microsoft Research. The SRC, which is held at select ACM conferences, will provide an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students attending Hypertext 2009 to receive a $500 travel grant from Microsoft Research to present their research at Hypertext 2009. All invited students will compete in a conference competition for the best presentations, with the winners eligible for a spot in the SRC Grand Finals. The SRC is a valuable opportunity for students to participate in Hypertext 2009 and to receive recognition from ACM for the quality of their research.

The Hypertext 2009 SRC consists of two rounds: a poster session and a presentation session. A panel of judges will select a number of finalists from the poster session, who will be invited to the presentation session. Winners are selected from the presentation session. The top three graduate and undergraduate winners will receive cash awards.

The Hypertext 2009 SRC winners will be invited to participate in the SRC Grand Finals, an online round of competitions among the winners of individual conference-hosted SRCs. The winners of the Grand Finals are invited to the ACM awards banquet together with their advisors, for an all-expenses-paid trip.

Submission Details

Students who wish to participate must submit the following information:

An abstract of up to 800 words explaining the content of the poster.
Presenter's email address, phone number and surface mail address.
Indicate whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student.
Name of department and school.
Name of academic advisor.
The abstract must describe the student's individual research and must be first-authored by the student. If the work is collaborative with others and/or part of a larger group project, the abstract should make clear what the student's role was and should focus on that portion of the work.
Submissions of short or full technical papers are not eligible for consideration of the SRC.

The International Symposium on Wikis (WikiSym) is the premier conference dedicated to wikis and related open collaboration systems and processes.

WikiSym 2009 aims to explore and extend the thriving wiki community, bringing together researchers, practitioners, writers and scholars to gather, discuss and share knowledge and experience on all areas related to wikis and wiki philosophy, ranging from social to technical, and from theoretical to experience studies.

The Information Structure and Presentation track represents a multitude of topics, which were traditionally represented at ACM Hypertext Conferences. The track program targets formal study of scholarly, structural, sculptural, spatial, open, dynamic and adaptive or any other type of hypertext (or Web-based Information System).

This track also focuses on how hypertext approaches and technologies can be applied to structure and present information in diverse domains, and how hypertext techniques can be exploited in classical and advanced applications.

The aim of this track is to bring researchers together to discuss models, architecture, applications, properties, or theory in general, about hypertext and hypermedia.

Youtube, Facebook, Second Life, Wikipedia, Google Earth and even Google itself are all less than a decade old and yet for many they are as taken for granted and indispensable as books or pens and paper. It is not only the pace of technological change which is unprecedented but also the speed of distribution and acceptance. These technologies affect every aspect of our lives: work, play, sex, politics and religion. Small wonder then that studies of human computer interaction (HCI) have adopted a term as wide as "user experience" to address their impact. HCI has begun to consider such areas as: fun, enjoyment, beauty, aesthetics and affect. As users become more concerned with the social and environmental impact of their technologies "user experience" is being conceived in still wider terms to include such topics as: ethics, politics and sustainability.

Possible topics include but are not limited to -
Fun, enjoyment and affect

Ethics and Religion
Human Computer Sexual Interaction

The deadline for submissions is the 20th of February. Submissions may take the form of research papers or shorter technical notes and should be submitted electronically at the Journal's Manuscript Central site

ACM Hypertext 2009 - Call for Workshop Proposals - EXTENDED DEADLINE

Hypertext 2009, The Twentieth ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia

ACM Hypertext 2009 will be running at least two workshops, taking place on the 29th of June before the start of the main conference. The purpose of the workshops is to provide a more informal setting where participants can exchange ideas on a focused topic and suggest directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for (young) researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community. Acceptance of workshop proposals will be based on the organizer's experience and background in the topic, and on the relevance of the subject matter w.r.t. the topics addressed in the main conference.

Proposals for Workshops should include the following elements:

- Title and acronym;
- Name(s), affiliation(s), mailing address(es) and e-mail address(es) of the proposers;
- A description of the topic and motivation of the workshop (not exceeding 500 words);
- A short description of the target audience;
- A first version of the Call for Papers;
- Type of the workshop (full-day or half-day);
- Arrangements for the organization of the workshop, including a brief outline of the workshop describing anticipated format, possible session names, invited talks, panels, demos;
- A short description on how the workshop will be advertised so as to ensure a sufficiently wide range of authors and high quality papers along with an estimation of the number of participants;
- Names, addresses, and home page links of people who have agreed to be part of the workshop program committee;
- A brief description of the organizers' experience and background in the topic, and links to homepages of the workshop chairs.

The organizers are encouraged to provide the following additional
information:

- A preliminary list of reviewers
- A list of potential authors
- A list of potential attendees

Proposals should be submitted electronically as a single PDF file to the
workshop co-chairs:

Workshop contributions will appear on the Hypertext 2009 Electronic
Proceedings.

SCOPE

The ACM Hypertext Conference is the main venue for high quality peer-reviewed research on "linking." The Web, the Semantic Web, the Web 2.0, and Social Networks are all manifestations of the success of the link. The Hypertext Conference provides the forum for all research concerning links: their semantics, their presentation, the applications, as well as the knowledge that can be derived from their analysis and their effects on society.

Hypertext 2008, held in Pittsburgh, was a real success. The number of submissions and attendees was up, a successful Student Research Competition took place, and a rejuvenated social linking track added new ideas and connections to the traditional core of the conference.

WSDM (pronounced "wisdom") is a young ACM conference intended to be the publication venue for research in the areas of search and data mining. Indeed, the pace of innovation in these areas prevents proper coverage by conferences of broader scope. The high attendance at the first WSDM, held at Stanford University in February of 2008, is a confirmation of this trend.

This year we accepted 29 papers out of 170 submissions (17% acceptance rate).
The conference will be held in Barcelona, 9-12 February, and besides the the technical talks of the accepted papers it will features two invited keynote talks by Gerhard Weikum (MPI, Germany), Jeff Dean (Google), and Ravi Kumar (Yahoo! Research).

The conference will also host three workshops:

Adaptive hypermedia is a research area at the crossroads of hypermedia and user modeling. Adaptive hypermedia systems offer an alternative to the traditional one-size-fits-all hypermedia and Web systems by adapting to the goals, interests, and knowledge of individual users as they are represented in the individual user models. This chapter is focused on adaptive navigation support technologies originally developed in the field of adaptive hypermedia. By adaptively altering the appearance of links or and the content on every browsed page, these technologies support personalized access to information. Over the last 10 years, adaptive navigation support technologies have been used in many adaptive Web systems in a range of application areas from e-learning to e-commerce.

The special issue focuses on foundations of adaptive hypermedia that are not specific to a particular application domain. (However, such foundations may be illustrated by applications in a specific domain.) Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

* acquisition and updating of individual and group user models
* (distributed) user modeling service architectures
* intelligent agent technology for adaptive systems
* composition of and communication between adaptive systems
* data mining for personalization and adaptation
* adaptation methods and techniques
* architectures for scalable high-performance adaptive systems
* usability and scrutability in user modeling and adaptive systems
* security and privacy in adaptive systems

Submissions that extend mature research publications at major conferences related to (adaptive) hypermedia are encouraged.

ACM SIGIR 2009: Request for mentoring

SIGIR is the major international forum for the presentation of new
research results and for the demonstration of new systems and techniques
in the field of information retrieval (IR).

Request for mentoring

The ACM Special Interest Group in Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR) offers a mentoring program for papers being submitted to the ACM SIGIR 2009 conference. If you would like help with your submission, you may ask for a mentor: a person who will help you with your submission to the SIGIR audience through one-to-one advising, usually via e-mail. A mentor can also familiarize you with the standards and deadlines of SIGIR submissions. He or she will also help you understand how to align your paper with the expectations of the typical SIGIR reviewer. Mentors are volunteers familiar with successful submissions.

Mentors are primarily available for full papers. To request a mentor, please send an email to Mounia Lalmas at mounia at acm.org. Requests can be sent between November 1, 2008 and November 17, 2008. No requests will be accepted after November 17, 2008. Please include:

- Your name and the names of your co-authors.
- The name of your department or school, and institution.
- A plain-text description of your work (a title and abstract is a
minimum requirement).
- Any specific questions or areas in which you would like help.
- At this stage, please do not include your draft paper.

Reasonable expectations for a mentor include giving advice as to the
most appropriate forum for your work, suggesting improvements to your
submission, suggesting how to deal with language problems, or referring
you to relevant research of which you might not have been aware.
Typically, a mentor might spend 3-7 hours on a submission. We carefully
match mentors to mentees, and wish to support you in developing your
work into a high-quality submission with a good chance of being accepted
and published.

Note the following:

- People requesting mentoring must have an almost complete submission
ready for the mentor to review by the date they request a mentor.
- If there is an experienced information retrieval researcher in your
department, a request for mentoring may be declined.
- Reviewers will not be informed of whether a paper has been mentored.
That is, the fact that a paper was mentored is not considered during the
paper selection process.
- A mentor will be assigned 2-3 days after the request has been made and
approved.

Mentors can be requested from November 1, 2008. The deadline for
mentoring requests is November 17, 2008.
